Pre-op physicalPrepare for surgery with a pre-operative physical exam

Before you can go into any surgery, you will need a pre-operative examination to prepare your body for the surgical procedure. At Lyrad Health, we provide comprehensive pre-operative physical exams to ensure a safe operation and recovery. Here, you can learn more about the checkup and why you might need to schedule an appointment with us today.

What is a pre-operative physical exam?

Depending on the type of surgery, a pre-operative physical exam is a physical exam conducted by a licensed practitioner at least two weeks to 30 days before surgery. The goal is to give doctors enough time to check and, if needed, implement measures to prepare patients for surgery.

It’s not the final step before surgery but instead should be viewed to address any underlying acute and chronic medical problems to reduce perioperative risk. It also allows surgeons and physicians to develop the best treatment course throughout the operation and recovery time. At Lyrad Health, we want to make sure your surgery happens as scheduled and avoid extended hospital stays. Unfortunately, without proper checkups, surgeries are often canceled or postponed.

Who needs a pre-operative exam?

Anyone going into surgery should receive a pre-operative physical exam. The goal is to ensure you are in good physical shape and receive the proper treatment before, during, and after surgery. If or when medical issues arise, the conditions are addressed before surgery.  This might change the surgery date or management strategies for the operation.

While all patients receive this type of exam, it’s essential for patients with certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. In some cases, patients with underlying conditions must see specialists before surgery.

What is involved in a pre-operative physical exam?

A pre-operative physical exam is like a regular health checkup and includes additional tests and examinations based on the surgery planned. You can prepare for the exam the same way you would prepare for a complete physical examination.

A typical physical before surgery includes (but is not limited to):

  • Height, Weight, and Vital Sign Checks
  • Medical, Surgical and Family History review
  • Physical Exam
  • Pre-operative Testing, including blood or urine tests
  • X-rays to check your heart and lungs
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart
  • Other tests might include cardiac stress tests, echocardiogram, or pulmonary function test.

Along with the exam, you will also receive an overview of how to prepare for surgery. This overview includes tips on reducing or quitting smoking, eating healthy, getting plenty of rest, and making proper arrangements for before and after surgery.
